PostSubject: Curly's Colonoscopy   Wed Sep 11, 2013 10:19 am

He got back from Jersey Saturday but didn't get over to
tell of it until yesterday afternoon.  Said when he got
back he immediately went on his diet for a scheduled
colonoscopy which was no food at all.

Said he was supposed to drink some horrible stuff to
clear him out.  While Diane wasn't looking he'd pour some
of it down the drain.  Said it was awful, like salt water
which it probably was to make his bowels secrete fluid
to wash him out.  When he was going clear he quit and
Diane said he'd done pretty good and went ahead and
poured the last two inches of it out herself.

Said they put in an IV and ran something through that
knocked him completely out and when they were done put
some stuff in that woke him up right then and he was
able to get up in about 15 minutes.  They wouldn't let him
go until he farted.  After a couple of minutes he gave them
one and continued all the way back from Gainsville.
Said it was completely clear and clean, no problem and that
it was worth it to him to find that out.

Sounds to me like he worried too much about his bowels
but the doctor may have instilled that in him.  "We can't
find anything wrong to treat so let's do some more tests"
I've got a lot more faith in nature than I do medicine as
it's practiced today.

$200 out of his pocket, the VA paid the rest.

Good story Thump. You have a way with telling them! The prep does suck of course but the procedure is a piece of cake. I'm certain screening at a certain age has led to findings that were preemptively treated and resulted in better outcomes. I suspect though when it comes to most GI related problems, the body warns you fairly quickly. I wouldn't have had a colonoscopy 5 years ago or even now if I weren't passing blood in such a shocking manner.

Yes, I understood your situation. Curly was fine though, presented no symptoms and reported nothing wrong with him.

Your Ma read my post and said that they say it should be done almost like it was a fact. Of course they do and they are studies that show how much it helps to catch things early.

No one with the means cares to chase it down and review it from the negative side so there won't be any study showing it hurts or doesn't help.

I told her she'd worked in medicine to long to be objective, she'd already drunk the koolaid. I know a little more about business than I do about medicine. It's business whether she recognizes it or not.
Just like trying to sell more chewing gum, they're out to make more money and get more customers and more money from the ones they already have. The studies released are no more trustworthy than the ones big tobacco used to put out or they pharmacy companies put out now and advertise on TV.

The VA is really bad about giving unnecessary tests.
