PostSubject: Elderly Medications   Mon Feb 03, 2014 9:24 am

Several months ago Dr. Daly said to try blood thinners and gave me a
prescription for a low dose.  I told him that my blood pressure wasn't a
constant and varied according to my surroundings and others present at
the time of testing.  He said "Try it and see".

I don't get it.  Try taking it to see if it hurst me?  The only symptom I
could come up with to tell his was tiredness.  So... Try it to see if I'm
less tired?  or Try it to see if the blood pressure comes down?  Oh well.

I take no medications at all so I thought I'd try to get a baseline without
meds.  Not easy.  Honey took it a couple of days ago and it was 169 over
something.  I took it again yesterday about 10:00 AM and it was 161 over 80.
Honey said not to smoke when I'm taking it so I tried when I got up this
morning before I smoked and got 150 over something I couldn't read.  The
tube came off when I tried to take it again, Honey put it back and pushed
me toward the chair and told me to sit down and without thinking I did and
began to ache immediately and relized that was wrong and got mad.

Went out on the porch and tried it again by myself, 169 over ninety
something.  Waited about half an hour like Honey said and 148 over 79
pulse 73 at 8:35 AM.  I hope to remember to take it two more times today
to see if I can get some consistency.  Then maybe try the pills.
I have no idea what I would notice.  I'll try to add what I get.

161 over 80 pulse=79 - 8:50 AM 2/2/2014

148 over 79 pulse 73 - 8:35 AM 2/3/2014
148 over 79 pulse 79 - 3:06 PM 2/3/2014

Well, you are consistently in stage 1 HBP with forays into the stage 2 category. Your diastolic numbers are ok. Unfortunately, as we get older, the systolic number becomes more important and yours is a little concerning. Good idea on getting a baseline though as it can change minute to minute as you said. Once established, try the pill and see if it helps. Sounds like that's your intention anyway.

Yes, I'm thinking seriously about giving it a try. As I understand your
mother (just a minute ago), it's not a blood thinner, it works by increasing
the size of the blood vessels. Sounds like beer and I like beer. I guess
vaso dialator.

She reminds me that after beer there's a rebound effect, probably is
with the medicine as well. If I forgot to take a pill after I'd been
taking the pills for awhile bp could go up dangerously?

I better wait another half hour after talking to Honey before I take a
measure of bp again.
